Elasmobranchii (/ ɪ ˌ l æ z m ə ˈ b r æ ŋ k i aɪ /) is a subclass of Chondrichthyes or cartilaginous fish, including the sharks (superorder Selachii) and the rays, skates, and sawfish (superorder Batoidea). Members of this subclass are characterised by having five to seven pairs of gill clefts opening individually to the exterior, rigid dorsal fins and small placoid scales on the : Chondrichthyes.

This bibliography is an initial attempt at providing a listing of publications dealing with the thirteen species of elasmobranchs addressed at the International Pelagic Shark Workshop Elasmobranchs as living resources book at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California on February 1.

Introduction. Elasmobranchs have historically been considered of low economic value when compared to other resources, with a minor and relatively low-value contribution to the overall world fisheries, and a minor and/or seasonal component of multi-species r, in recent years, sharks and rays reached higher catches and value in directed commercial, subsistence and Cited by: 8.

Biology and Physiology of Freshwater Neotropical Fish is a must-have for fish biologists and zoologists. Students in zoology, ichthyology, and fish farming will also find this book useful for its coverage of some of the world’s rarest and least-known fish species.

Current GHRI research in this area includes studying the genetic basis of mating behavior in the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, the scalloped hammerhead, Sphyrna lewini, and the blue shark, Prionace glauca.

Because mating behavior of sharks is difficult to observe directly in the wild, it is largely unknown whether the few observed cases of.

This list does not pretend to be comprehensive, rather it includes those scientific works that I deem most important or interesting plus a few popular works that are both scientifically accurate and readily available.

Coverage has been expanded from anatomy to include modern information on physiology and biochemistry.

We were able to confirm this using a fantastic eggcase identification key provided by the Shark Trust. We were super impressed with the information and resources available from the Shark Trust’s website, which has a dazzling range of beautifully produced species factsheets – a great way to start getting to know these enigmatic elasmobranchs.
